Sports Editor

Athens Banner-Herald is looking for a Sports Editor to manage the sports department, serving the needs of the newspaper with a high standard of journalism and cooperation.Work will be performed in the newsroom and in the field, under constant deadline conditions. Travel is required. Night and weekend work may also be required. Athens Banner-Herald is now part of Gate House Media one of the largest media publishing companies in the country.

  • 3-5 years of daily newspaper experience with management experience, preferred
  • Able to supervise and motivate sports department staff, work with newsroom leaders and organize the workload of the sports department to meet newspaper needs – print and online
  • Reliable transportation, a good driving record and current auto insurance
  • College undergraduate degree




  • Directs the sports department and all its employees
  • Represents department at newsroom planning meetings and makes sure budgets, memos and other materials are prepared for each meeting as they pertain to the sports department
  • Meets deadlines and works under pressure with quality sport sections delivered on time
  • Bring new ideas and solutions to improving the sports sections to make it better for the readers and competitive with competing daily sports sections in the Athens market
  • Responsible for content of sports section, making sure we provide thorough timely coverage of local, national and international sports that serve the needs and interests of our readers
  • Keep up with current events and the content of the newspaper, including local, national  and international news, sports and features
  • Manages the budget of the sports department
